A survey of all burial grounds in Laois was carried out in 2011. The survey was carried out by Barker & Associates Archaeologists on behalf of Laois Heritage Forum [www.laois.ie/heritage], with the support of the Heritage Council [www.heritagecouncil.ie] . Projects
IRD Duhallow commissioned a three month Historic Graveyard training project which began in 2012. The second phase was undertaken in 2015. Training was provided in 28 graveyards across the region. The final phase of the project to complete the surveys was funded by the Heritage Council in 2017.
A number of local authorities in Dublin, Kilkenny and Cork combined to organise an Historic Graveyards Roadshow which ran from March-September 2012. Supported by the Environment Fund 2012 (Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht) , the Local Authorities and Historic Graves, this roadshow combines training in heritage conservation, archaeology, local history and genealogy for community groups and schools in a number of communities.
The Slieveardagh Hills in south Tipperary have a rich, deep history and a community active in researching this history. Slieveardagh Rural Development and South Tipperary Development Company have commissioned Historic Graves to train a community team to survey and publish up to 20 historic graveyards in the barony. Training commenced in Killenaule and Ballingarry and also encompassed graveyards at Buolick, Kilcooley and Ballinure.
Grave memorials throughout Co. Kilkenny have peoples names carved into stone and embedded in the landscape. Many of the memorials are to men and women who served in various armed forces and took part in actions, events and campaigns in Ireland and abroad. As we enter a decade of commemoration in Irish and European history Kilkenny County Council is collaborating with the military historians in Stephens Barracks Museum and with Historic Graves to survey and publish grave memorials with a military heritage association in the county.
